With projects as diverse as the Melbourne Sound Tube, The Westin in Perth and Monash University’s Caulfield Campus, Electrolight is a welcome addition to the upcoming Light·Space·Design 2019 summit.

Donn Salisbury, Sydney Director of Electrolight has been confirmed as one of the summit’s keynote speakers.

Electrolight’s work philosophy is underpinned by the notion of light being a force of strength for people, be that in a physical or emotional sense. Salisbury’s presentation topic hints that achieving such lighting while ensuring sustainability demands equal technical and creative ability.

Salisbury will draw from his 18 years of lighting design experience to present on the nexus between creativity and sustainability. He will explore to what extent technology and human-centric elements can be utilised within the application of energy-efficient lighting and provide a reality check on achieving a balance between sustainable and creative lighting design.

The studio’s breadth of knowledge spanning technical and artistic expertise is backed up by the architectural, engineering and fine arts backgrounds of the team, including Salisbury, which he will draw on throughout his presentation.

Ramus Illumination is another lighting design practice well-versed in the art of melding creative and technical elements within their work. Founder/Creative Director Bruce Ramus, who recently presented at Media Architecture Biennale in Beijing, will also be joining Light·Space·Design 2019 as a keynote speaker.

Ramus’s experience in producing a number of significant urban lighting designs and installations makes the most of light’s growing potential to forge communities closer and increase engagement through city façade lighting and innovative LED systems for public venues.

Though the practice designs complex lighting systems including those at Perth’s Optus Stadium and the real-time weather display at Melbourne’s 888 Collins Street, they also produce stage lighting for concerts and live events – from Guy Sebastian and Tina Arena’s Australian tours to Movie World’s Carnivale festival.

Lighting systems require as much practicality as they do creativity.

Balancing the two elements is strongly reflected in Ramus Illumination’s work - especially in their award-winning design for Optus Stadium, which utilises three separate lighting systems to illuminate the stadium and sync with video and audio systems to communicate key moments within a sporting match.

Bruce Ramus will provide further insights on the Perth Stadium’s lighting at Light·Space·Design 2019.

A host of key players within the architecture and design sectors will join Donn Salisbury and Bruce Ramus at the event, including NDYLight’s Steve Brown, David Bird of 2B Designed and Glen Haron, Managing Director at Haron Robson. 2013’s UK Lighting Designer of the Year Florence Lam will also fly across from London to explore the changing nature of lighting design amongst a backdrop of societal and cultural shifts. Like Salisbury and Ramus, Lam has had plenty of experience melding the creative with the technical in order to create truly human-centric and highly functional lighting designs, even in an era of constant change.

Light·Space·Design 2019 is kicking off on the 27th of March at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre.
